What:
In 14+ years of IT management and consulting I have come across a lot of new and interesting issues, it is a constant in the technical world we live in. To solve some of these issues, sometimes you just need the right tools. With that in mind, and after years of telling people where to go (in a nice way) to get these tools, I decided to put this page together. It has moved from various websites over the years to it's current and hopefully final resting place - here.

Why:
These links are a good start to help in researching issues you may be having with your system or network or just to enhance your general technical knowledge. This page has been composed over years, from various technical issues I have had to solve. I will continue to add and update these links as I encounter new issues and resolutions.

How:
I have grouped these items by category and type as well as the typical level of complexity.  General
(G), is for everyday things that we all encounter and should keep up with if we have a computer - just like maintaining your car.  Intermediate (I), for the occasional more troublesome issues that pop up and Advanced (A), the more technical and sometimes nasty issues that are geared for the more technically advanced user.  Advanced items should be addressed carefully and may require getting some outside help. Within each grouping, the order indicates it's preference by me. Items at the top of each list are the better or more usable - based on my experience and opinion.

I do my best to keep this page updated, but I have a life and this website is only part of it. some items might become stale, and if you encounter this, please email me so I can update or remove it. Although I do not recommend anything I would not or have not used myself, keep in mind, that using these links and tools is at your own risk. If you encounter difficulties with any of the links or tools, contact the site administrator of the link you visited or the developer of the tool you were using.

Help:
If you are in over your head and need personal help and your local to the Tampa Bay area, [if your not and are willing to pay airfare - I can still help :)]  I may be able to consult with you in the evening or on the weekends, as this is not my full time day job.  My standard rates are $100/hr for consulting and field visits (plus travel when required), and $50/hr for webmaster work, with a (1) hour minimum for both with additional time billed in (15) minute increments.

  Windows and Office Updates:

What is Windows Update?
Microsoft Web site that provides updates for Windows operating system software and Windows-based hardware. Updates address known issues and help protect against known security threats. If you turn on Automatic Updates, Windows Update can deliver high priority updates to your computer as they become available. You can decide when and how updates are installed. When you visit the Web site, Windows Updates scans your computer and tells you which updates apply to your software and hardware. You choose the updates that you want to install and how to install them. This is an important tool in your arsenal to keep safe. Keep in mind that not all updates are necessary - if your a novice user, stick to the "critical updates" and only those that apply specifically to you - i.e. if there is an update for wireless issues, and you do not have wireless - don't install it.

What is Office Update?
Similar to the Windows Update site, but with a lot more information for Office users. The Microsoft Office Web site provides updates for Microsoft Office Applications and Suites of software as well as tons of usage information, templates, and tips and tricks for Office applications. Updates address known issues and help protect against known security threats. When you select "Check for Updates" Office Update scans your computer and tells you which application updates apply to your software. You choose the updates that you want or need to install.

  Email - SPAM:

Spam is unsolicited e-mail on the Internet. (E-mail that is wanted is sometimes referred to as ham.) From the sender's point-of-view, spam is a form of bulk mail, often sent to a list obtained from a spambot or to a list obtained by companies that specialize in creating e-mail distribution lists. To the receiver, it usually seems like junk e-mail.  <Click for More Info>

  Email - Phishing:

Phishing is e-mail fraud where the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking e-mails that appear to come from well known and trustworthy Web sites in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from the recipient. A phishing expedition, like the fishing expedition it's named for, is a speculative venture: the phisher puts the lure hoping to fool at least a few of the prey that encounter the bait. Web sites that are frequently spoofed by phishers include PayPal, eBay, BestBuy, and most Popular Banks.  <Click for More Info>

  DNS Info and Utilities:

The Domain Name System or Service (DNS) is a process that maps hostnames (how humans address servers) to IP addresses (how computers address servers).  When you visit www.wescotech.com, your computer resolved that hostname as 209.35.208.111. This translation happens every time you access a website, FTP server, or your e-mail.  <Click for More Info>
